Rochester Healthcare Embraces AI to Revolutionize Patient Care Efficiency

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With artificial intelligence (AI) continually progressing and being employed across various sectors, nearby medical practitioners are starting to integrate it into patient consultations.

Providers at the University of Rochester can now utilize Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX), an artificial intelligence tool developed by Microsoft, to document their consultations provided they receive verbal approval from the patient. This technology functions like a digital scribe, converting spoken dialogue into written transcripts and offering a concise overview of key topics covered during the session with the healthcare provider.

Kristina Haralambides, who specializes in otolaryngology and serves as the Director of Informatics at URMC, elucidated how the software can enhance the patient experience.

As [healthcare providers] sit in an examination room with a patient discussing their issues, they aren’t staring at their computers, inputting information and attempting to capture every single detail,” Haralambides explained. “Instead, they are concentrating fully on the patient and their concerns.

As per Haralambides, the software has been subject to rigorous testing, which included a patient survey carried out by URMC in the previous year. According to her statements, the outcomes indicated that among 500 patients, those who utilized DAX tended to rate their visit experiences as having higher quality.

She likewise pointed out how the software eases the load of data entry for providers, a task they have historically been responsible for.

I don’t believe anyone entered healthcare or attended NP or PA school with the intention of spending their weekends writing notes,” Haralambides stated. “Reducing the burden on the data entry aspect allows practitioners to focus on providing medical care and attending to patients, which is what drew them to this profession initially.

Haralambides mentioned that so far, the implementation of DAX in URMC patients’ appointments has proven beneficial for both healthcare providers and patients alike.

“Our mission was aimed at lessening the paperwork load for healthcare providers, yet even more crucially, it was about getting patients to interact with their providers once again,” Haralambides stated.
