The newly appointed Pope, Leo XIV, has recognized artificial intelligence as a key concern for mankind.
Robert Francis Prevost was elected pope on Thursday, making history as

in the 2,000 year history of the Catholic Church.
As he laid out the vision of his papacy on Saturday, the

The newly appointed pope urged for a global agreement to oversee artificial intelligence, cautioning that this potent technology could potentially reduce human interactions to nothing more than computational processes.
The American pope vowed to continue with some of the core priorities of Pope Francis, as some members of the church grew concerned that he may stray from
the late pope’s commitment to inclusion and advocacy.
Pope Francis used his 2024 peace message to call for an international treaty to ensure that AI was developed and used ethically. In his address to the cardinals who elected him, Pope Leo cited Francis a number of times.
He quoted Francis’ 2013 mission statement, making a commitment to making the Catholic Church more inclusive and attentive to the faithful and a church that looks out for the “least and rejected.”
Pope Leo cited artificial intelligence when discussing why he chose his papal name. The pope after whom he named himself, Pope Leo XIII, led the Church from 1878 to 1903 and established the basis for contemporary Catholic social teaching.
He did so with his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed workers’ rights and capitalism at the dawn of the industrial age.

The deceased Pope condemned both unregulated capitalism and government-controlled socialism, thereby shaping a uniquely Catholic approach to economics. He aligned himself with his predecessor, stating, “In our time, the Church presents to all individuals the wealth of its social doctrine as an answer to yet another industrial revolution along with advancements in artificial intelligence that present fresh challenges for safeguarding human dignity, justice, and employment.”
As the Conclave approached, artificial intelligence was employed to generate memes and images portraying well-known personalities as the Pope. A specific meme showing Donald Trump dressed as the pontiff sparked significant controversy—especially when it was reposted by Trump himself.
During his speech to the cardinals who had chosen him, Pope Leo referenced Francis several occasions. Quoting from Francis’ 2013 mission statement, he pledged to make the Catholic Church more welcoming and responsive to all believers, focusing particularly on those who are marginalized and cast aside.
