Crypto Sleuth ZachXBT Reveals Wrong Suspect in Bored Ape NFT Theft

Cybersecurity researcher ZachXBT stated that law enforcement apprehended an incorrect individual in connection with a 2022 scam that stole over $1 million worth of Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

ZachXBT mentioned that he traced the wallet involved in the fraud and connected it to an X account which has now been removed.

However, in 2023, authorities arrested Sam Curry, who previously worked as a security analyst for Yuga Labs, at an airport after identifying him as a potential suspect in the case, according to ZachXBT. It should be noted that Yuga Labs is responsible for creating the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT series.

“It’s regrettable to observe that a security researcher was arrested when more substantial clues about a threatening actor who might be responsible are still available,” stated ZachXBT.

Anonymous attacker

In December 2022, an unknown assailant purloined 14 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs, with each one valued at approximately $86,000 at the time of theft, as reported.

Law enforcement inadvertently examined logs from OpenSea that contained [Curry’s] home IP address and wrongly connected him to the crime as a result, according to ZachXBT.

“In fact, as part of his security duties at Yuga, [Curry] was looking into the theft and utilized a private key inserted into the website’s JavaScript by the malicious actor,” according to ZachXBT.

ZachXBT claimed he utilized forensic tracking methods—such as mapping out the movement of assets through Tornado, an Ethereum mixing service—to pinpoint what he believes could be the individual responsible for the 2022 theft.

He stated that law enforcement officers ought to “ask for complete access to all data linked to [the person’s] social media profiles” and investigate the blockchain transactions connected to their supposed digital wallet.

Introduced in 2021, the Bored Ape Yacht Club ranks as one of the most valuable NFT collections, boasting an aggregate market cap exceeding $300 million, data shows.
